Repositioning Technologist for High Precision Manufacturing Processes

  In year 2017, CTURA Solutions, a startup company, ventured on fabricating high precision component parts for an engine prototype. During the tour round manufacturing facilities in key regions such as Osun, Delta, Lagos, and after fabricating the components, CTURA team observed there were little consideration for precision and tolerances.

  The engine prototype was such that high precision was required to avoid leaks as well as for effective functioning. In fact, CTURA team concluded that it would be a miracle for the absence of leaks in the assembled engine. How long will engineers like us in Nigeria leave our works to fate?  Such experiences aren’t peculiar to CTURA Solutions alone. Many companies outsource spare parts and fabrication works to foreign nations because of unavailability of skills as with this regard.

How long will engineers like us in Nigeria leave our works to fate?

  With the Nigeria vision of becoming an industrial nation like other developed nations, it needs strategic repositioning especially in high precision engineering and manufacturing.

  The benefits of the repositioning includes;

1.      Reduced cost of manufacturing because of the local fabrication of high precision component usually fabricated in foreign countries.

2.      Technology development. Complex engineering systems can be fully fabricated locally.

3.      Economic development. Money is rather circulated internally contributing to the economic development of the nation.

4.      Development and utilization of our talents. A lot of creative and innovations will result from the repositioning.

 

  High precision manufacturing require the following;

1.      Resources

2.      Competence.

 

  From observations during the touring activity, the resources such as the machineries which includes CNC are readily available. But the challenge is the competence, that is the skills. The skillset includes strong motor skills, and a wit for accuracy which require lots of eye and body movement co-ordination. This we concluded are best carried out by talented persons who we may refer to as the crafts men such as the machinist and technologist.

  We interacted with machinists and technologists during the tours. And concluded that such repositioning can be best achieved via necessary mentorship and proper education which is lacking. It will be best channeling resources on talented technologist (craftsmen). And one of the ways include; A machining or welding competition from which a set of talented individuals are selected based on the outcome of a given task.

  The competition will be more like a talent hunt show similar to music ones such as Project Fame, Naija Sings etc. There are many of these talents scattered around the country who will participate depending on incentives or financial reward from the competition. Also, a regular organization of such events will also spur talented young stars into such careers.

 

  By and large, there are engineering and craftsmanship talents in the Nation, waiting to be exploited especially in the aspect of high precision engineering. It’s high time Nigeria, starts infusing resources into high precision manufacturing development, for this is necessary for her industrialization.

Human Capacity- the multiplier

I n the early 1800’s, there were concerns on the possibility of massive population starvation from the year 1930. Such predictions were due to factors such as high population growth and diminishing arable farm lands. The world’s population as at then was estimated to be about 1 billion, and further increase would imply food scarcity. Today, the world is over 6 billion and still counting, and there hasn’t being food shortages. In fact the yield quality is even estimated to be better with higher calories than previous years. What was the reason for this outcome? A German scientist by the name Fritz Haber, invented a means of synthesizing ammonia the core compounds in fertilizers, from air. Such example is one in many of humans with great minds and capacity, multiplying the once scarce resource.

Humans who produce value or multiply available resources are the creators, innovators and the entrepreneurs. They add value. They are the highly priced individuals in any society. These persons are referred to in this blog as the MULTIPLIERS. They are the examples of the extent of the human capacity.

The human capacity comprises of the intellect, emotions, body, creative abilities and skills. The intellect is the center of human reasoning and thoughts; the emotions, consist of our perceptions and feelings; and the body, the physical interface or interaction with the world; as well as our creative and innovative abilities- that is our ability to develop novel ideas and concepts adding value. And the extent of development of this qualities in other word, the cultivation of MULTIPLIERS, determines the level of growth and development of any society.

Fritz Haber’s innovation as mentioned, indirectly caused the multiplication of food production making humans less dependent on the diminishing scare mineral resource for plant growth. There are other revolutionary technologies such as a much earlier invention, the printing press by Jules Gutenberg. These stated technologies were innovated in Germany having little or no natural resources. Other developed nations such as South Korea, Japan are also similar spurning new innovations.

The extraction of Nitrogen from the air (for fertilizers) came about at the vast depletion of Chilean nitrate (organic fertilizers). In fact parts of Chile that were once rich in organic fertilizers has being left desolate (this is an example of the impact of relying on natural resources and not human capacity). The Germans as well as other developed nations focus on developing their human capacity (it is only humans that can be multipliers). This is key in the development of the African nations. The human capacity which includes the body has to be developed and empowered such that they have the necessary MULTIPLIER know-how and skills.

The skill of MULTIPLIERs from my observation is acquired via experience, formally or informally. Part of the human capacity is the human intellect. In the human intellectual development, learning to think, especially with regards complex problems is essential. In Nigeria, a lot of focus is on academics with little on developing thinking skills. This skill is vital because resources or information has to pass through effective thought processes to be of any value. As the intellect is essential, so the emotions.

The emotional attributes include perseverance, self-control, patience, diligence, courage etc. Many effective or world class scientist and inventors possess strong emotional attributes. They are able to focus on problems for long period till solutions are obtained. And the process of obtaining a solution may require lots of experimentations and trials which likewise requires diligence. These attributes are developed over time. It is important that such attributes be part of our school curriculum.

The development of creative skills involves the development of the creative imaginations through the creative arts such as crafts, drawings, paintings, writings etc. There are many great scientist and innovators who were musicians such as Albert Einstein, Werner Heisenberg etc.

Lastly, the human body is as important as every other aspect of the human capacity because it houses all other attributes. If the body is dysfunctional, the other human attributes would most likely be hampered in performing their functions. The health care in African society is an often neglected sector when growth and development is concerned. Only with a functional health care, can there be possibilities of reaching our potentials as MULTIPLIERS.

All in all, cultivating MULTIPLIERS is the key to sustainable growth and development in the 21st century. The extent to which MULTIPLIER can achieve (multiply) is dependent on their limits and to the extent of their empowerment. Maximize the potentials of MULTIPLIERS by empowering them to the best of their abilities. This would require developing the various aspect of the human capacity.

Beginnings of Industrial Giants

R ome wasn’t built in a day, likewise, technology firms. Famous multinationals like ACER, Amazon, GE, HP, Microsoft, Shell, Honda etc., famous for their technological prowess were pioneered by private individuals. And who could ever have thought, the firms humbly started from living rooms, garages or small workshops? Some of these multinationals today are associated with their parent countries such as Taiwan, America etc, and were founded by students, after their postgraduate studies. For instance, Hewlett Packard (HP) was started by two post-graduate students. Likewise, Stan Shin and his wife, the founder of ACER, and the list goes on and on. More interestingly about these firms was, some began with  relatively small capitals.

Hewlette Packard began in a garage with a startup capital of about $600, ACER was about $25000, even Apple with a working capital of about $2000. There is nothing big about the beginnings of these firm’s. They were started by young private individuals rather than the government or experienced, retired personnels.

They began in their garages, living room even dorm room rather than in industrial complexes. And they began with the little they had. But the interesting point about their history, is their ability to turn this little into wealth, “I mean into billions”. And this they did by adding value through their works, sills and human intellectual ability.

According to Wikipedia, the total asset work of Apple in the year 2016 was estimated to be about $300 billion. As at 2015, the revenue generated by HP was estimated at about $30billion.

Adding value involves skills, knowledge and great imaginative and intellectual ability. And boosting this capability, requires continuous education, skill development and improvements. Continuous education may not require passing through a degree awarding institute, it is rather, your ability to learn. And creative and imaginative abilities can only be developed by exercising them through creative activities like art, music or other imaginative exercises.

This stories are enough to motivate the young entrepreneur with little fundings but big dreams. It is all about the little you have and the value you’re capable and willing to add to it. For its this value added, that is the multiplier.
